NEWS
HALL OF FAME3/2/10-
Congratulations to MHS Coach Pete von Hoffman for receiving the Coach of the Year Award and for MHS varsity assistant Coach Rob McOmish for receiving the Gil Gibbs Award!!
Matt Tierney, MHS '06, earned the Big East Defensive Player of the Week honors. Tierney led a defensive charge for the Orange against the Black Knights. The senior defender was matched up against Army's leading goal-scorer, Garrett Thul, and helped hold the rookie attackman to one goal that came while Syracuse was a man down. Tierney also had three ground balls and led the Orange defense to its 10th consecutive game allowing 10 goals or less.-The Wire
Bobby von Hoffman, MHS '06 scored 3 goals and 1 assist in an 11-8 win for Marist over Holy Cross.
1/22/10- Matt Tierney, MHS '06, has received Second-Team All America Honors as a close defender for Syracuse
From the Syracuse University Website: On the defensive end, first-team preseason American Joel White leads an experienced group that features three more players that earned preseason All-America recognition. Close defenders John Lade and Matt Tierney earned preseason second-team and honorable mention All-America honors, respectively.
1/12/10- Mark Tyree, MHS '77, and a four-year starter will be inducted into the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Neilson Dining Hall on the campus of Rutgers University. The Mounties won three State Championships during the playing days of Tyree, who was named first-team All-State, Montclair High MVP and the New Jersey High School Player of the Year in 1977.He also garnered a spot on the state's All-American squad that year. Tyree played collegiately at Rutgers, earning All-American nod in 1979 before playing in the North-South Game in 1981, his graduation year from RU. Later, Tyree was named to The Star-Ledger All-Century Team. For further informaton and an invitation to the ceremony and dinner, contact Peter Stanton, New Jersey Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame chairperson, by email at peterjlax@aol.com.
11/20/09-Dean Witty, former Montclair High School head coach, has been named the head lacrosse coach at Columbia Senior High School in Maplewood,NJ. Coach Witty (1979-82 JV; 1983-89 Varsity) won two NJ State Championships and one NJ Coaches Tournament during his tenure in Montclair.
10/09-As some of you may know, several alums including Mike Hynes, Mitch Lawrence, Bill McCutcheon, Paul Edwards and Mike Pounds are spearheading an effort to have Mr. Gibbs accepted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
On September 29, 2009, the Board of Directors of NJ Lacrosse, (of which MHS alum and varsity coach Peter Von Hoffman is a member) voted unanimously to recommend Mr. Gibbs in a letter to the national committee.
Bill Pilat, the coach with the most wins in Roanoke history (and potentially in Div III history), the many high school, junior and club coaches around state and country are a testament to his lasting influence. Stay tuned... as you know this will be a very difficult honor to achieve for Mr. Gibbs and we may need letters of support from alums.
