MHS Lacrosse - The 1980s
The 1980’s started off with a bang, when in June of that year the Mounties beat archrival Columbia 8-4 in the NJSIAA finals, winning the State Championship and overall #1 ranking. By the time the 1980s were over the Mounties compiled a 127-53 W/L record (71%W). They played in 4 State Championships winning in ’80, ’84, and ’85 and losing in 1981. The Mounties also reached the Coaches Tournament finals twice; winning it in 1986 and losing in 1981.
Houston Webber was Head Coach from 1979 to 1982, compiling a 48-22 (69% W), making the state finals in 79-81. Houston’s last season in ’82 saw the Mounties fall to their first sub-par record since 1967; it had been 15 years and both teams finished with 6-7 records.
1981 saw the Mounties losing both the Coaches Tournament and State Tournament finals going 15-6 for the season. 1982 was a down year that was the last for Coach Webber. Houston took on a tough task following the departure of Coaches Gibbs and Rob. With the addition of Dean Witty, they formed a sound coaching team that saw much success. Webber’s departure resulted in Dean Witty being elevated to Head Coach of the Mounties.
Coach Witty was MHS Head Coach from 1983 to 1989, compiling a 92-37 overall record (71%W) that includes two NJSIAA (back to back) and one Coaches Tournament Championships (1986). The ’80s saw 7-High School All Americans:
1981- Bill Pilat
1984- Mark Woods
1985- Adam Rodell
1986- John Novak
1988- Phil Mandry/Hank Rodgers
1989- Daniel Hinds
The end of the 1980s saw Coach Witty stepping down as leader of the Mounties. Like Coach Witty, Chris Johnson had been the JV Coach at Montclair garnering much success at that level. His winning would continue into the 1990s
