MHS Lacrosse - the 1970s

MHS closed out the 1960’s on a high note by winning their first State Championship.  Little did any of the players know what lofty heights the Mounties would reach over the next ten years.  From traveling to England in 1974 to three undefeated seasons: ‘71, ‘72, and ‘77, the Mounties of the ’70s were simply terrific.  In 1969 Coach Gibbs brought in Homer Robinson to run the JV program.  Coach Rob or “Mr. Rob” to his players, was a man’s man who knew little about the game of lacrosse when he signed on.  Big and tough with a booming voice, HR, as some called him, focused his players’ attention on the basics of the game.  Practices consisted of drills, drills, and more drills, and then his players would finish practice by taking a running tour of Montclair.

Over the next ten seasons, the Mounties would win 158 games and lose only 17.   That’s better than a 90% winning percentage.  Coach Gibbs would coach through the 1978 season.  He died of cancer a short couple of weeks after winning his 7th overall State Champion (1 in the 60’s and 6 in the ’70s).  His W/L record during the ’70s was a phenomenal 145-11; that’s a 93% winning percentage!  Coach Rob also retired in ’78 after winning his 8th straight JV State Championship.  HR would pound the basics of lacrosse into his players while instilling a spirit that made his player's brothers and his team's winners primed for Mr. Gibbs’ refinement and magic.  Coach Gibbs’ magic was in the way he instilled confidence into his players and his players responded with State Championships in 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1977, and 1978.

In 1979, Houston Webber was named Head Coach and Dean Witty took over the JV.  The pair were given the almost impossible task of filling the shoes of two true legends.  They performed admirably.  The Varsity that year finished 13-6, losing in the State Championship to Columbia’s best team ever by a score of 10-4. It is worth noting that the next year, the Varsity team avenged the ’79 loss with an 8-4 win over Columbia in the State Championship.
