MONTCLAIR FUTURES – a club lacrosse offering by Montclair for Montclair.
Since early March our community has dealt with the reality of the health crisis in big and small ways - from unimaginable illness and loss to the cancellations of the Spring season. Missing the season was especially disappointing for the nearly 50 players who were beginning their first year of organized lacrosse. For us, the pandemic has made fulfilling our mission to make lacrosse more accessible for Montclair’s boys even more challenging.
To meet the challenge, we must adapt to meet the realities of the moment as we plan for the future of our Montclair Futures program. For those who don't know, the Futures program was set up to compliment the regular Spring season, which runs from March through May. Futures players are looking for more training and competitive play with their Montclair teammates in the Fall, Winter, and early Summer.
We have measured our options and listened to our coaches, players and parents, and as a result, are re-casting our Montclair Futures program according to the overwhelming consensus that a Futures program should:
• Remain both local and even more affordable; • Provide more training from top notch coaches for both experienced AND new players; • Offer more scholarships opportunities to players of need; • Serve more of our diverse community; and • Better complement our Spring program as well as private club and school lacrosse offerings.
To do this, our Futures program will now consist of the components laid out in the attached brochure. We see this new offering as providing options for players at all levels, within a schedule that we can control to avoid conflicts with other Montclair sports as well as with private club lacrosse and school programs.
As a practical matter, Futures will remain “club” lacrosse for many of its players. For those who are playing or plan to try out and play for other private lacrosse clubs, Futures will be fully complementary to those experiences. (We can even help prepare players for club tryouts and guide families toward appropriate solutions.) In other words, some players might think Futures is enough off-season play, while others might want to sign up for Futures and another club. Our scheduling will endeavor to avoid conflicts wherever possible.
These changes will align Futures more closely to the wants and needs of our community and allow us to provide local and affordable options throughout the year - taught by coaches committed to player and team development - thus improving the quality of both player and team along the way.
